World of Warcraft Forever launched last night, and while there were a ton of people playing, the servers were remarkably stable. It turns out that Blizzard dedicated a ton of resources to making sure those servers were solid.

Last night, after the game launched, Blizzard tweeted out a meme from its World of Warcraft account, with a Gnome tapping a car with the WoW Forever logo, with a caption saying: "*Slaps Roof of WoW: Forever* This baby is running on: 3,924 Virtual Machines, 251,136 GB of Memory, 70,480 CPU Cores." That's a huge amount of memory, and it seems to have paid off with the smoothest Blizzard launch I've seen in years.

Blizzard's post bragging about the sheer amount of memory in its servers comes just a week after Sam Altman said in a podcast that it was "quite terrible" for people to have RAM in their own computers, rather than in a data center. Of course, he did later walk it back, instead claiming that he had "been arguing for the world to ramp up memory production for a long time." Still, that's 251,136GB of RAM that's dedicated to running an incredible MMO, rather than powering yet another data center.

Blizzard Executive Producer and Vice President for World of Warcraft Holly Longdale also posted celebrating the smooth launch, and said "this launch was crazier than the insanity we imagined but thankfully the team built plans and contingencies. They are incredible imo." And, while we likely will never know just how many people logged into Forever for the launch, I can say firsthand that there were hundreds of characters in the starting zone right at 6pm EST, so the team definitely deserves recognition for holding everything together.

Even on the WoW forums, which are hardly a bastion of positivity, there are a number of threads with players praising WoW Forever for being one of the smoothest WoW launches of all time. On X/Twitter, WoW streamer Darth Microtransaction posted, "I don’t know how they did it, but they did. World of Warcraft Forever launch was the smoothest launch I’ve seen. Almost 0 Que[ue]. 0 dc, and no lag."

This launch was a solid start to a game that's going to take most people weeks to go through. The beta was huge on its own, despite being limited to just level 30. And, even when folks knew their characters would get deleted, so many people played the beta that developers commented on it for being the "craziest numbers [they've] seen." And now that the full game is here, it's going to be interesting to see what players discover, and what gets added in the future. Because, according to Blizzard, there's potential to visit some fan favorite locations from future expansions, too.
